Today in Tech – 1983

On this day in 1983 radiologist Michael W. Vannier of the Mallinckrodt Institute of Radiology in St. Louis, along with his colleagues J. Marsh (Cleft Palate and Craniofacial Deformities Institute, St. Louis Children’s Hospital) and J. Warren (McDonnell Aircraft Company) published the first three-dimensional reconstruction of single computed tomography (CT) slices of the human head. To make cranial imaging possible, computer-aided aircraft design techniques were adapted. This was a huge step in three-dimensional imaging and surgical planning for Oral and maxillofacial surgery, Neurosurgery and Otolaryngology.
