On this day in 1996 telecommunications giant AT&T and Microsoft announced their alliance to promote Microsoft’s World Wide Web browser, Internet Explorer. The move was designed to allow both companies to gain easier entrance into the rapidly growing Internet business at the time. Under the deal both companies were to promote and jointly distribute Internet Explorer and AT&T’s Internet service. It was a mutually beneficial arrangement, as it pushed AT&T’s goal of expanding its long-distance telephone service and was another move for Microsoft to offset its late entry into the online computing software market.
